Douglas DC-8-33 accident report

On August 20, 1962, the DC-8-33 PP-PDT c/n 45273 of Panair do Brasil crashed during take-off of RW14 from Galeo int'l airport, Rio De Janeiro. Had started with 94 passengers and 11 crew members with destination Lisbon in Portugal. At 148 kts, the rotational speed, the crew pulled the stick towards them but nothing happened. They break off the start and brake fully but did

not use the jet reversers. The DC-8 shoots off the runway and ends up in the sea, sinking to 8m depth. Most passengers manage to get to safety in time, but 15 are killed. On March 5, 1967, the DC-8-33 PP-PEA, c/n 45253 of the Varig crashed near Monrovia in Liberia. Flight 837 from Rome (FCO) to Monrovia (ROB) over 4482km with 71 passengers and 19 crew members. Crew does not carry out approach of RW04 properly, causing the aircraft to arrive too low and hit the ground 2000m before the runway. It shoots through 250m and catches fire. There are a total of 56 deaths, of which 5 on the ground. Location : +-200m
